I’m an educator specializing in reading and writing, a mentor to teachers, a published author, a frequent speaker at state and national conferences, and the founder and president of Literacy Strategies Consulting, LLC.
I collaborate with K-8 literacy educators worldwide, helping them foster skilled, engaged readers and writers by transforming research and complex theories into practical strategies tailored for modern classrooms.
As a writer, I create research-based books and resources, working closely with teachers, instructional coaches, administrators, and district leaders to enhance their understanding and application of student-focused literacy teaching.
I believe in teaching that respects each learner as a whole person—culturally, emotionally, socially, and academically. My approach to education embraces vulnerability, encouraging learners to reflect, make mistakes, and advocate for their growth along the way.
My teaching career began in a Brooklyn elementary school, where I stepped into a fourth-grade classroom with little more than a key. With limited resources and guidance, I found a mentor - a teacher down the hall - whose support was vital in those formative years.
Later, I moved to a different New York City school known for its focus on professional development, instructional coaching, and staff collaboration. My growth as an educator was exponential both because of the professional learning I participated in within the school walls and as I learned from courses at Teachers College, Columbia University, in pursuit of my Master’s in Education. I also had the opportunity to mentor aspiring teachers from Columbia and realized I loved working with adults as much as children.
The guidance I received as a teacher was essential to my professional growth and satisfaction, making professional development central to my journey.
Eventually, I transitioned from classroom teaching to coaching, visiting schools across NYC and beyond, contributing to curriculum development, and creating classroom-ready materials that teachers could use right away. What followed was a natural progression into writing books to offer teachers the practical resources I once needed.
As requests for consulting grew, I formed a team of trusted colleagues, establishing Literacy Strategies Consulting. Together, we now work with educators around the world, offering support and expertise.
We began looking into improving reading strategy work and student conferencing in order to improve our work with our K-5 readers. Reaching out to Jennifer Serravallo was the best decision we ever made! Our work with our Literacy Strategies consultant and utilizing the Reading Strategies book with our teachers and students was some of the best professional development work that our district has ever participated in. To have on-site work done with our students and teachers was invaluable to improving our teaching of reading.
We have highly recommended this professional development to many districts around us and would highly recommend this work with Leah Steiner, our consultant, to any district looking to improve their reading practices. The ease of use of the Reading Strategies 2.0 book and the new charts that accompany this book have given us strategies at our fingertips that we can use at a moment's notice during student conferences.
We highly recommend Jennifer Serravallo's resources and professional development opportunities, as they were a driving force in our district's reading growth.
